Visit of the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera – Brasília, April 27, 2018
The President of the Republic of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, will make a state visit to Brazil on April 27, 2018. In addition to being received by President Michel Temer, he will visit the President of the House of Representatives and the President of the Supreme Court.
The visit comes just over a month after President Piñera's inauguration, his first trip of his second term, underlining the great vitality of the bilateral relationship. Brazil and Chile share fundamental values such as the defense of human rights, democracy and the appreciation of multilateralism, adopting convergent positions in regional and multilateral forums. The two countries also promote the process of rapprochement between MERCOSUR and the Pacific Alliance, an initiative aimed at deepening regional integration.
During the visit, a Public Procurement Agreement and a Protocol on Financial Services will be signed, which shall contribute to increasing the already proficuous economic relationship between Brazil and Chile. An announcement on the beginning of negotiations of a bilateral free trade agreement will be made, adding new themes to the existing trade agreements in order to deepen and modernize integration in the trade of goods, services and investments.
The presidents will issue a joint statement with a review on a wide range of bilateral relations topics, including trade issues, infrastructure projects, consular affairs, cooperation in defense, science and technology, culture and Antarctic affairs, and multilateral and regional issues.
Brazil is the main destination for Chilean investments abroad, with a total stock of US$ 31 billion, and is Chile's main trade partner in South America. In 2017, the bilateral trade reached US$ 8.5 billion, which represents a 22% increase over the same period last year.
