Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Russian Federation – Russia, November 20, 2013
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado, will make an official visit to the Russian Federation on November 20, 2013. It will be the first bilateral official visit of Minister Figueiredo outside South America. In Moscow, he will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and will give a lecture at the Diplomatic Academy of Russia.
In his meeting with the Russian foreign minister, Minister Figueiredo will review the main themes of the bilateral and multilateral agenda, including the situation of Brazilian biologist Ana Paula Maciel, detained since September 19.
The Brazil-Russia strategic partnership, established in 2002, has become deeper over the past few years due to the multiple bilateral contacts and the meetings of the High-Level Commission on Cooperation (HLCC) and the Intergovernmental Cooperation Commission (ICC). In December, ICC will hold a meeting in Brasilia to address projects in the fields of defense, trade, investment, energy, science and technology, education and sports.
Between 2003 and 2012, bilateral trade increased by 187%, growing from US$ 2,055 billion to US$ 5,931 billion. Russia is the largest European partner with Brazil and the nineteenth largest worldwide.
In the multilateral scope, Brazil and Russia cooperate, on a growing basis, within the framework of the UN, the G-20 and BRICs, among others.
