VIII Brazil-European Union Meeting of the High Level Political Dialogue

The VIII Meeting of the Brazil-European Union High Level Political Dialogue took place in Brasilia on May 30, 2023, in the context of the re-launching of the Brazil-European Union Strategic Partnership.

The two delegations had a fruitful exchange of views on a wide range of topics in the bilateral, regional and multilateral spheres, in order to further deepen the solid cooperation between Brazil and the EU.

The two sides noted with satisfaction the increased number of high-level visits and contacts between Brazil and the EU since January 2023 and discussed the preparations for the visit of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, scheduled for June 12, 2023.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to the revitalization and expansion of the Strategic Partnership established in 2007, the first between the EU and a Latin American country. They recognized that the resumption of the annual Brazil-European Union Summits would be an important step in that direction. They expressed the understanding that the next summit should produce concrete results with the objective of expanding and deepening their bilateral relations.

They also agreed to make the existing mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation more efficient, with a view to addressing mutually agreed priorities.

They shared perceptions on various themes such as defense and security, environment and climate change, the Mercosur-EU agreement, the preparatory process for the CELAC-European Union Summit, and the priorities for the Brazilian presidency of the G-20, as well as the war in Ukraine and the situation in Haiti and Venezuela, among other topics.

The High Level Political Dialogue Meeting was co-chaired by Ambassador Maria Luisa Escorel de Moraes, Secretary for Europe and North America of the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations, and Mr. Enrique Mora, Deputy Secretary General/ Political Director of the European External Action Service.
