Travel of the President of the Republic to Washington
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will visit Washington on February 10, at the invitation of President Joe Biden. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Janja Lula da Silva and a delegation that includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Vieira; the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad; the Minister of Environment, Marina Silva; the Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco; the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa; the Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator Jacques Wagner; and the Chief Advisor of the Presidency, Ambassador Celso Amorim.
The meeting will provide an opportunity to give renewed impetus to Brazil-United States relations, based on the defense of democratic institutions, the fight against hate speech and disinformation, the promotion of human rights, and the fight against climate change. Also on the agenda will be trade and investment, including the integration of supply chains, energy transition, hunger and poverty reduction, and food security. Both leaders will also discuss the main issues of the international agenda, such as peace and security and the G-20.
The meeting between presidents Lula and Biden will be the starting point to revitalize and update the mechanisms of bilateral dialogue and cooperation, and to intensify the meetings between the leaderships of the two countries, in order to obtain concrete results to the benefit of both societies.
In the year 2024, Brazil and the United States will celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations. The bicentennial will provide a framework for the new moment in the relationship between the two countries.
About two million Brazilians reside in the United States, the largest community of Brazilians in the world. Itamaraty maintains its largest consular service network in that country, composed of ten Consulates-General and one Vice-Consulate.
The United States is Brazil's second largest trading partner, having registered last year a US$ 88.7 billion trade exchange, an unprecedented value in the historical series. Teh country occupies the first place as a destination for Brazilian exports of manufactured and semi-manufactured goods. Besides this, it is the country with the largest stock of investments in Brazil, estimated at US$ 123 billion.
