The 29th Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the OAS – Washington, May 31, 2017

Minister Aloysio Nunes will attend the 29th Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the OAS, to be held on May 31, at the headquarters of the organization in Washington. The meeting has been convened to discuss the serious situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The Meeting of Consultation is one of the main instances of the OAS and its purpose is “to address matters of an urgent nature and of common interest to the American States".

Brazil expects the meeting to make a decisive contribution to the efforts of Venezuelans to return to the path of full democracy, with the support of all the countries of the Americas.

On the following day, Minister Aloysio Nunes will meet with the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, to analyse the outcomes of and to follow-up on the Meeting of Consultations, as well as to address other issues on the regional agenda, in particular the 47th General Assembly of the OAS, to be held in Mexico from June 19 to 21, 2017.

The strategic vision of the OAS establishes four essential pillars to favour of social justice and welfare of the peoples of the continent: strengthening democracy, promoting and defending human rights, fostering integral development and fomenting multidimensional security. The OAS is the world's oldest regional organization in operation. It was established in 1948 and replaced the Pan American Union, founded in 1910.
