PRESS RELEASE N.69
Support for the re-election of António Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations
The Brazilian government has welcomed the decision of the United Nations Security Council to recommend the re-election of António Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations (2022-2027 term). The UNSC recommendation has the firm support of Brazil.
Former Prime Minister of Portugal (1995-2002) and former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (2005-2015), Guterres began his tenure as U.N. Secretary-General in 2017 after the U.N. General Assembly elected him by acclamation. During his tenure, he has persistently faced the unprecedented challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic, promoted the United Nations reform plan, and contributed to the protection of human rights.
As a founder member of the U.N. and a candidate for a non-permanent seat at the Security Council (2022-2023 term), Brazil offers its firm support to Secretary-General António Guterres. Brazil also reaffirms its commitment to continue to work constructively, based on constitutional principles and inspired by the objectives that guided the creation of the United Nations towards the peaceful resolution of disputes, the primacy of international law, and the strengthening of its member States’ role in the governance mechanisms, with a view to an increasingly representative and effective Organization.
