Support for Brazilian participation in the Cannes Film Festival

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Guimarães Rosa Institute (IGR), supports the participation of Brazilian moviemakers in the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in France, from May 16 to 27. The resumption of support to the film sector is a collective initiative that includes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the National Film Agency (Ancine), and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), along with entities such as the Audiovisual Industry Union of the State of São Paulo (SIAESP), Rio Filme, Spcine and the Paradiso Project.

The Cannes Film Festival is the main meeting of the audiovisual industry worldwide. The 2023 edition represents the complete reopening of the event since the beginning of the pandemic. The event brings together more than 15,000 film industry professionals from more than 120 countries, as well as authorities and representatives of government agencies, official development funds, film commissions, associations, representatives of film festivals, cultural and academic institutions, among others.

The IGR support in coordination with the Brazilian Embassy in Paris will enable the participation in the Cannes Film Festival of representatives of the +Mulheres Lideranças do Audiovisual Brasileiro group as well as of the Instituto Nicho 54, which promotes the careers of black audiovisual professionals in Brazil. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ initiative will also enable the participation of representatives of the following films: "Nelson Pereira dos Santos – Vida de Cinema", by Aída Marques and Ivelise Ferreira (Cannes Classics session); "Retratos Fantasmas", by Kleber Mendonça Filho (Official Selection / Special Session); "Os Delinquentes", by Rodrigo Moreno (Mostra Un Certain Regard); "Crowrã (The Buriti Flower)", by João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora (Mostra Un Certain Regard); "Written in Bones", by Tainá Muhringer (Cannes Docs - Marché du Film); "O Filho da Puta", a Brazilian co-production of Otto Desenhos Animados (Animation Day - Marché du Film) and "Levante", by Lilah Hallah (Semaine de la Critique), as well as the composer Pedro Salles Santiago, selected in the program Spot The Composer (Marché du Film), dedicated to the composition of soundtracks.
