State Visit of the President of the Argentine Republic, Mauricio Macri, to Brazil – Brasília, February 7, 2017
At the invitation of President Michel Temer, the President of the Argentine Republic, Mauricio Macri, will pay a state visit to Brazil on February 7. President Macri will hold a meeting with President Temer and will be hosted by the Head of the Federal Senate, the Speaker of the Lower House of Congress and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Federal Court.
The State visit will take place at a time of special convergence of bilateral relations and will promote the development of initiatives of importance to the two countries in several areas, particularly trade and investment, border security, border integration and development, science and technology, and defense.
Argentina has just assumed the pro tempore presidency of MERCOSUR and will be followed by Brazil in the second half of this year. The two leaders will address the priorities to be implemented in order to, along with other partners, rescue the true meaning of MERCOSUR: free market and democracy. In addition, they will favor measures designed to remove intra-MERCOSUR trade barriers and to diversify and reinvigorate the bloc's relations with partners in the region and elsewhere.
Buenos Aires was the destination of the first bilateral visits of President Michel Temer and Foreign Minister José Serra, a sign that Brazil attaches importance to its relations with Argentina. Brazil was the first country visited by then President-elect Macri.
Brazil is the main destination of Argentine exports and the main supplier of goods to the neighboring country. Argentina is the second destination of Brazilian exports of manufactured goods and the third-largest trading partner of Brazil.
