Situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Brazilian Government has received, with concern, reports of escalating violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly in the city of Goma. Of special concern are the worsening humanitarian situation and acts of violence targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Brazil urges all parties involved in the conflict to recommit to the ceasefire agreement and to engage in ongoing mediation efforts, especially within the Luanda and Nairobi processes, with a view to reducing regional tensions and achieving sustainable peace in the Great Lakes region.

Brazil strongly condemns the attacks on the troops of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and the mission of the Southern African Development Community in the DRC (SAMIRDC), which have, to date, claimed the lives of 13 personnel.

Brazil is a longstanding contributor to MONUSCO, currently deploying 22 Brazilian military personnel to the Mission.

The Brazilian Government reiterates that all parties to the conflict are obliged to ensure the safety and protection of UN personnel and facilities. Attacks against MONUSCO constitute a grave violation of international law and international humanitarian law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Brazilian nationals residing in, transiting through, or planning to travel to the country to monitor updates on the Embassy of Brazil in Kinshasa’s website and social media channels, remain informed about the security situation in their areas, and avoid large gatherings.
