Ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela

The Brazilian Government repudiates the ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela which has withdrawn the prerogatives of the National Assembly of Venezuela, in a clear breach of the constitutional order. It is also with great concern that the Brazilian Government sees the ruling by the court that arbitrarily suspended the immunities of Venezuelan parliamentarians.

Full respect for the principle of independence of branches of government is an essential element to democracy. The decisions by the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela violate this principle and fuel the political radicalization in the country.

In light of recent events, Brazil calls on all relevant actor for prudence. Brazil reiterates that effective and good faith dialogue is the most adequate solution for the restoration of the institutional normality in Venezuela. Brazil emphasizes that the primary responsibility for reversing the course of the crisis lies with the Venezuelan government itself.

The Brazilian Government will continue to coordinate regionally, with all interested parties, to examine the worrisome situation in Venezuela.
