PRESS RELEASE N. 430
Rio de Janeiro named UNESCO’s 2025 World Book Capital
The city of Rio de Janeiro was chosen today, October 4th, by UNESCO's Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, as the World Book Capital for 2025. The successful candidacy of Rio de Janeiro, organized by the city government, had the support of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Rio de Janeiro is the first city in a Portuguese-speaking country to receive this distinction, which will contribute to the promotion of the Portuguese language and creative industries in Portuguese language.
The selection of Rio de Janeiro as World Book Capital is part of the resumption of the cultural diplomacy agenda by the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In congratulating the city of Rio de Janeiro for this achievement, Itamaraty reaffirms its support for the implementation of commitments made to UNESCO as the World Book Capital. These commitments include promoting freedom of expression and publication, and the right of the public to access information, and freely participate in the cultural life of the city.
