PRESS RELEASE N. 277
Rescue of Brazilian tourist on volcano in Indonesia
Teams from the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency have just begun the third day of efforts to rescue a Brazilian tourist on Mount Rinjani (3,726 metres high), a volcano on Lombok Island about 1,200 km from Jakarta. According to information received by the rescue team, the tourist reportedly fell from a cliff that borders the trail along the volcano’s crater.
From the moment the tourist’s family contacted it, the Brazilian Embassy in Jakarta mobilised local authorities at the highest level, enabling the deployment of rescue teams to the area of the volcano where the fall occurred, a remote region roughly four hours from the nearest urban centre. The Brazilian Ambassador in Jakarta personally contacted the International Director of the Search and Rescue Agency and the Director of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency and has been receiving updates on the progress of the operation. Two embassy staff members are travelling to the site today to follow the rescue efforts in person; yesterday these were hampered by adverse weather and poor visibility.
On behalf of the Brazilian Government, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has also initiated high-level contacts with the Indonesian Government to request reinforcements for the search operation in the Mount Rinjani crater.
