PRESS RELEASE N. 475
Renewal of sanctions against Haiti – October 19,2023
Brazil has chaired today the United Nations Security Council meeting that approved the renewal of sanctions imposed on individuals designated by the Haiti Sanctions Committee.
Established in October 2022 by resolution 2653 (2022) and expanded in early October of this year, the regime includes international travel ban, targeted asset freeze, and embargo on the transfer of arms, ammunition and security equipment, with an exemption for those intended for the Haitian government and transfers authorized by the UN.
Multilateral sanctions concerning Haiti aim at preventing organized crime from accessing weapons and economic resources, thus helping the Haitian government in its security policy, without imposing economic and humanitarian restraints on Haiti’s population.
The Brazilian government reaffirms its support for a political understanding that allows free elections to be held and recalls that socioeconomic development is the only alternative to ensure Haiti's stability. It also underscores the importance of the international community intensifying its support for the country.
