Reelection of Brazil to the Peacebuilding Commission
On July 21st, Brazil was re-elected to the Organizational Committee of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission for a term of office for the biennium 2023-2024. The country's election by acclamation attests to Brazil's credentials to contribute to international peace and security.
Brazil was an important player in the negotiations that resulted in the creation of the Peacebuilding Commission in 2005, and since 2010 it has had an uninterrupted presence in the body. Since 2007, it has chaired the Guinea-Bissau configuration of the Commission, being the first developing country to chair a specific configuration of the body.
For Brazil, lasting peace requires attention to the interdependent relationship between security and development, as well as the search for inclusive and sustainable political solutions adapted to the challenges of each particular situation.
Improving coordination between the Security Council (UNSC) and the Peacebuilding Commission is one of the priorities of the current Brazilian mandate on the Council. For the current July Brazilian presidency of the UNSC, Brazil envisioned the participation of the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission in two meetings.
