PRESS RELEASE N. 580
RAID BY ISRAELI SECURITY FORCES ON UNRWA FACILITIES IN EAST JERUSALEM
The Brazilian government condemns, in the strongest terms, the incursion today, the 8th, by Israeli security forces into the compound of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem, in flagrant violation of Israel's obligations as an occupying power and as a party to the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, which enshrines the inviolability of UN agency facilities.
The action— which involved cutting off communications, seizing goods and equipment, and replacing the United Nations flag with the Israeli flag—represents a further step in the escalation of pressure and arbitrary and illegal measures adopted by Israel, on the legal, political, and military levels, aimed at making the functioning of UNRWA in the State of Palestine impossible.
Brazil, currently holding the presidency of the UNRWA advisory committee, reaffirms its firm and unwavering support for that United Nations agency, whose work is indispensable and irreplaceable for providing basic services to Palestinian refugees.
Recalling the advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice of July 19, 2024, and October 22, 2025, on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, Brazil urges Israel to evacuate UNRWA facilities and respect the Agency's mandate, recently renewed by a large majority of the United Nations General Assembly.
