President Dilma Rousseff to Visit Mozambique – Maputo, 18 and 19 October 2011
On 18 and 19 October, President Dilma Rousseff will visit the Republic of Mozambique. On the occasion, she will take part in the ceremonies of the 25th anniversary of the passing of former president and independence hero Samora Machel, meet with President Armando Guebuza and also hold meetings with Brazilian investors in the country.
In recent years, Brazilian investments in Mozambique increased significantly. Noteworthy is the project by mining company Vale, which received a concession for coal mine exploration in Moatize, in the north of the country. The investment is estimated at US$ 4.5 billion (of which US$ 1.5 billion have already been spent) and its maximum production is estimated at 25 million tons of coal per year. The project involves parallel investments in infrastructure and other subproducts, which could reach US$ 8 billion. Other Brazilian investment projects comprise the energy, ports and airports infrastructure, oil and paper and cellulose sectors. In 2009, the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) approved a US$ 300 million line of credit, earmarked for investments in the country. In 2010, bilateral trade reached US$ 42,380,000.
Today, Mozambique is one of the largest beneficiaries of Brazilian cooperation and the first one in Africa, both in volume and in number of areas. There are noteworthy initiatives in the health area (production of antiretrovirals drugs); education and professional training (Brazil Open University in Mozambique, which caters to approximately 600 students in different regions of the country; hosting nearly 400 students in Brazilian universities); agriculture (Pro-Savannah Project, to develop agriculture in Mozambique’s tropical savannah, carried out in partnership with Japan); and professional training.
