Passing of Professor Antonio Paulo Cachapuz de Medeiros

'I have learned with deep sorrow of the passing today of Professor Antonio Paulo Cachapuz de Medeiros, former Legal Counselor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1998 and 2015. Throughout almost twenty years, Professor Cachapuz has made inestimable contributions to Itamaraty, supporting Brazilian diplomatic initiatives with his dedication, capacity for work and remarkable legal knowledge.

Professor Cachapuz has graduated in Legal Science from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul. He was also a member of the Hague Permanent Court of Arbitration, honorary member of the UNIDROIT Governing Council, president of the ALADI Administrative Labor Court and judge at the Mercosur Administrative Labor Court. Since January 2016 he was judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

On my behalf and on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of Professor Cachapuz at this moment of grief and pain.'
