Passing of Professor Antonio Augusto Cançado Trindade
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs received with great sorrow the news of the passing away of Professor Antonio Augusto Cançado Trindade, judge at the International Court of Justice, in Brasília last May 29th.
Brazil loses one of its most brilliant and dedicated jurists. Legal Advisor to Itamaraty from 1985 to 1990 and Professor at the Rio Branco Institute from 1979 to 2009, Cançado Trindade inspired generations of diplomats in the defense of international law. He was judge and president of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and magistrate, elected twice by the United Nations, of the International Court of Justice. With numerous awards and published Works, he has earned the admiration of his peers throughout the world.
Throughout his career, Professor Cançado Trindade provided invaluable collaboration to Itamaraty, to Brazil and to international law. During his career, he remained faithful to his ideals and, with untiring determination, left as his legacy a greater humanization of international law.
The Minister of State and the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, admirers of the personal and professional qualities of Professor Cançado Trindade, express to his family their most sincere condolences with the certainty that the memory of the Professor will live on in his works, in his ideas, and in all the people he inspired by his example.
