PRESS RELEASE N. 12
Passing of Carlos Menem
The Brazilian government learned with sorrow of the passing of Carlos Saúl Menem, former president of the Argentine Republic.
Carlos Menem was president from 1989 to 1999. In 1991, he was the Argentine signatory to the Treaty of Asunción, which created MERCOSUR. That year, his administration signed the Agreement for the Exclusively Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy, which established the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC). As a statesman, he played an important role in advancing relations with Brazil and regional integration, based on the principles of open integration and the international presence of our countries.
The Brazilian government conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Government and the people of Argentina and to the family of former president Menem.
