PRESS RELEASE N. 160
Official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Mexico - Mexico City, April 27 and 28, 2023
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Vieira, will undertake an official visit to Mexico City on April 27 and 28, 2023. During this visit, he will co-chair the V Binational Brazil-Mexico Commission alongside the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard. This marks the first visit of a Brazilian Foreign Minister to Mexico since 2016.
Minister Mauro Vieira's visit celebrates the centennial anniversary of the opening of the Brazilian resident Embassy in Mexico, symbolizing the renewed path of rapprochement between the two countries across all areas of cooperation. The Foreign Ministers will discuss the expansion of economic relations, taking into consideration that the current Economic Complementation Agreement No. 53 only covers 13% of the tariff universe. They will also explore technical and scientific cooperation projects, initiatives to enhance educational exchanges, and the strengthening of cultural ties between both nations. Additionally, regional and global matters of mutual interest will be addressed.
Mexico welcomes around 300 thousand Brazilian visitors annually. The Brazilian government is actively seeking a negotiated solution to address the situation resulting from Mexico's unilateral decision to reinstate visa requirements for Brazilians entering the country.
Brazil ranks as Mexico's 8th largest trading partner, a position reciprocated by Mexico in relation to Brazil. The export of Brazilian agricultural and livestock products has contributed to Mexico's efforts to strengthen food security and combat inflation. In 2022, bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record high, exceeding $12 billion. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, trade flow has already seen a 38% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Minister Mauro Vieira will also hold a meeting with the Secretary-General of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL), Ambassador Flavio Bonzanini. OPANAL, headquartered in Mexico City, plays a pivotal role in the global fight for nuclear disarmament.
