New Brazilian passport, valid for up to 10 years, to become available outside Brazil
The new Brazilian passport, valid for up to ten years, is to be made available outside Brazil from August onwards. There will be a staggered release schedule, consisting of three stages. The delay between the release of the new passport in Brazil and its release abroad is due to the availability of the new model by the Brazilian national mint and to logistical arrangements needed to distribute the new material to more than 200 Brazilian diplomatic posts overseas. The staggered release will also allow the diplomatic posts to use up their remaining stocks of old passport booklets, in accordance with the principle of economy in public administration.
In mid-August, Brazil’s consulates in South America and Central America will be the first to issue the new passports. They will be followed, at one-week intervals, by the consulates in Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Finally, at the beginning of October, the consulates in North America will complete the process.
For the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the launch of the new passport is an important milestone in the continuous process of improving the consular services provided to Brazilian communities abroad. The new passport responds to a long-standing and legitimate demand on the part of Brazilians living abroad, and follows the firm commitment made by the Brazilian Government at the most recent Brazilians Abroad Conference in Salvador in November 2013. The adoption of the new passport will consequently decrease the demand for this document abroad, freeing up human and material resources for other areas of consular work.
Brazilian consulates around the world have been instructed to inform the local public about the staggered introduction of the new passport.
