PRESS RELEASE N. 64
Mr. Mathias Cormann takes office as the new OECD Secretary-General
Brazil congratulates Mr. Mathias Cormann on his appointment as Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and wishes him success in his tenure.
SG Cormann begins his work at the head of the OECD at a critical moment when the international community is facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic while seeking to lay the foundations for a vigorous and sustainable economic recovery.
Brazil expresses its readiness to work with the new Secretary-General in leading the Organization for the benefit of its member and partner countries, in collaboration with the G20 and other international organizations.
Becoming a full member of the OECD is a priority for Brazil's foreign policy and strategy to improve national public policies and integrate the country further into the world economy. Increased engagement in the OECD contributes to Brazil's progress towards better economic and regulatory practices, as well as enables the country to better face the new and complex challenges of the global economic scenario.
Furthermore, the OECD also has much to benefit from the full membership of Brazil, which will increase its representativeness and add new experiences and insights to its pool of expertise.
SG Mathias Cormann and the OECD can count on Brazil to actively participate in its activities and researches, as well as to continue to defend the Organization's fundamental values: democracy, market economy and the promotion of sustainable development.
Brazil expresses its gratitude to Mr. Ángel Gurría for the work done over his 15 years at the head of the OECD General Secretariat and, in particular, for the support given to the engagement with non-member countries and to the enlargement of the Organization, from 30 to 38 members, during this period.
