Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, chaired the ministerial meeting of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), held today on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. In February 2024, Brazil assumed the PBC presidency for a one-year term. This is the second time that Brazil holds the presidency of the Commission since its creation, in 2005.

The meeting focused on the work of the Commission and priorities for the 2025 Review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture. This process takes place every five years and aims at improving the United Nations support for national and regional efforts in preventing the outbreak, escalation, continuation and recurrence of conflicts. Through peacebuilding actions, the Commission seeks to offer responses to the underlying causes of conflicts and to act in preventing their outbreak and condolidating the foundations for a lasting peace.

In his address, Minister Mauro Vieira underscored the importance of strengthening the Commission’s capacity to deliver effective results for countries voluntarily on its agenda, including through partnerships with international financial institutions and the sharing of best practices. He also underlined the need to bring the PBC, the Security Council and other United Nations bodies closer together, with a view to addressing peacebuilding efforts more effectively and comprehensively.

As president of the PBC, Brazil has encouraged discussions on the future of the Commission and on the importance to play a more active role in conflict prevention, recognizing the undeniable interdependence between security and development in the pursuit of lasting peace.
