Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota to travel to Uruguay – Montevideo, 18 January 2011
Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota will make a working visit to Montevideo on 18 January 2011.
Minister Patriota will hold a working meeting with the Minister of External Relations of Uruguay, Luis Almagro, and will pay a courtesy call President José Alberto Mujica and other Ministers of the Uruguayan Government.
Among the main issues in the bilateral agenda are the works of the Bilateral Committee for Strategic Planning and Productive Integration (CBPE), whose meetings, organized by the respective Foreign Ministries, aim at ensuring the proper implementation of join priority projects in areas such as infrastructure, productive integration and science and technology.
The Minister will also address ways to strengthen regional integration – especially with regard to MERCOSUR and UNASUR – and will strive to coordinate the efforts to ensure that their countries’ international standing reflect the commitment to multilateralism and democratization of global governance mechanisms.
Brazil is Uruguay’s main trading partner. In 2010, trade exchange reached US$ 3.1 billion, a 19.4% increase from 2009. Due to a 27% increase in Uruguayan exports to Brazil, the exchange has become more balanced, with a small surplus of US$ 43 million for Uruguay. Trade has also improved in quality, with a significant increase in manufactured products in Uruguay’s export mix.
