PRESS RELEASE N.97
Meeting between the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, and the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa
The President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, received the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a meeting at the Alvorada Palace today. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Carlos Alberto Franco França, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, Augusto Santos Silva, participated in the meeting.
The meeting offered an opportunity to address the resumption of bilateral dialogue mechanisms in preparation for the next Brazil-Portugal Summit and for the celebrations of the 200 years of Brazil’s Independence, in 2022. In this context, the recent visit of Minister Carlos França to Lisbon, from June 30th to July 2nd, and the meetings on the sidelines of the Summit of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), in Luanda, from 15 to 17 of July, were positively evaluated.
On the occasion, Presidents Bolsonaro and Rebelo de Sousa reaffirmed the convergence of views between Brazil and Portugal in the cultural, economic, commercial and multilateral fields and reiterated their mutual commitment to promote economic recovery in the post-pandemic context.
Brazil-Portugal relations are founded upon historical and emotional ties, which are embodied in the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Consultation, signed on April 22, 2002. The two countries maintain a traditional and dense political, economic and cultural partnership, in addition to the continued coordination in international forums.
