PRESS RELEASE N. 159
Letter from the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
On December 11, Minister Ernesto Araújo was pleased to receive a letter from the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Patricia Espinosa, in which she expresses her thanks to Brazil for recently presenting its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.
Below is the transcription of the letter:
"Excellency,
I am writing to express my gratitude to you for the recent submission of Brazil’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), in accordance with decision 1/CP.21.
The effort made by your country in preparing this important submission during these challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, is remarkable. Brazil’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 37 per cent by 2025 and 43 per cent by 2030, compared with 2005, is commendable, as is the inclusion of a long-term indicative objective of achieving carbon neutrality in 2060.
Brazil’s strategic planning and sustained commitment to ambitious climate action and the objectives of the Paris Agreement are greatly appreciated.
I look forward to your leadership and to our continued cooperation in the months ahead, as we work to secure success at COP 26, and a sustainable and climate-safe future for all.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
Patricia Espinosa”
