PRESS RELEASE N. 144
Launch of solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea
The Brazilian government condemns the launch of a solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on April 13.
This marks the first time the country has tested this specific type of missile, and represents a development with a destabilizing impact on the region.
The test is another direct violation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1718, which mandated that the DPRK cease all activities related to its ballistic missile program. The Brazilian Government urges the DPRK to comply with all relevant UNSC resolutions.
As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Brazil defends that political and diplomatic engagement is the best way to achieve the goal of a stable, peaceful, and nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
Brazil remains committed to playing a constructive role in creating the necessary conditions for the reduction of tensions and the resumption of negotiations toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
