PRESS RELEASE N. 136
Joint Press Release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy – South Africa suspends the imposition of anti-dumping duties against Brazilian exports of frozen chicken cuts
Brazil received positively the news of the suspension for up to 12 months of the application of anti-dumping duties against Brazilian exporters of frozen chicken meat to South Africa, a measure that harmed the competitiveness of the Brazilian product in the South African market.
Since December 2021, South Africa has been applying antidumping tariffs against Brazilian exporting companies, ranging from 6% to 265.1%, in addition to the import tax.
Since then, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy of Brazil have maintained constant dialogue with the investigated Brazilian companies and with the South African authorities, including through technical manifestations related to the dumping investigation. The Brazilian Government will remain attentive to the case in the expectation that the temporary suspension of anti-dumping tariffs will become definitive.
In 2021, Brazilian exports to South Africa exceeded US$1 billion, of which around 17% corresponded to exports of frozen chicken cuts. Brazil is a reliable and competitive supplier of chicken meat. Brazilian production is important for guaranteeing food security in different markets, especially in the current moment of imbalance in international supply chains and general rise in prices.
