PRESS RELEASE NO. 212
Israeli military action during visit of a diplomatic delegation to Jenin, State of Palestine
The Government of Brazil condemns the actions of Israeli armed forces, including the use of live fire, during the 21 May visit by a diplomatic delegation composed of representatives from more than twenty countries to the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank, State of Palestine.
The visit, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine, was intended to show the hardships faced by the local population as a result of the recurrent Israeli military operations in that city.
Brazil recalls Israel’s obligation, as the occupying power, to observe the basic tenets of international law and to respect the principles and norms of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, including the inviolability of diplomatic agents.
Brazil further urges Israel to suspend its military actions in Palestine, in light of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice of 19 July 2024, which found the Israeli presence in the occupied Palestinian territory to be unlawful.
