Israeli attack on the city of Rafah
The Brazilian government condemns the launch of an Israeli military operation against the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
By deliberately choosing to escalate the conflict in an area known for its high concentration of civilians in Gaza at this moment, the Israeli government once again shows disregard for the observance of the basic principles of human rights and humanitarian law, despite calls from the international community, including its closest allies. Such an operation may also imperil ongoing mediation and dialogue efforts.
Brazil emphasizes its call for global governance bodies responsible for maintaining peace and security worldwide, in particular the United Nations Security Council, to overcome the indifference and inaction that have allowed the worsening of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
In urging all parties to immediately cease violence and engage in talks that facilitate a ceasefire and the release of hostages, Brazil reaffirms its commitment to a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, the only viable path to achieving lasting peace for the peoples of Israel and Palestine, as well as for the Middle East region.
