PRESS RELEASE N. 8
International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust
Today, January 27, Brazil joins the celebrations around the world in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. On this day 77 years ago, the survivals of the Nazi barbarity were liberated from the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. The tribute keeps the memory of the Holocaust alive so that humanity does not forget one of the darkest periods of its history.
Home to the second-largest Jewish community in Latin America and the 10th-largest in the world, Brazil is proud to have welcomed families who fled the horrors of the Holocaust. Some of them arrived here with the help of Aracy de Carvalho Guimarães Rosa and Ambassador Luiz Martins de Souza Dantas, members of the Brazilian Foreign Service, who were given the title of “Righteous Among the Nations” by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, in Israel.
In 2021, Brazil joined the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) as an observer country, with the commitment to promote education and research on the Holocaust and to improve domestic policies to fight anti-Semitism.
