PRESS RELEASE NO. 206
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia
On 17 May, the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is observed, a date that symbolises the global commitment to promoting and protecting the equality and dignity of LGBTQIA+ persons. The occasion offers an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by this population and to mobilise action against all forms of discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The Government of Brazil has historically championed the rights of LGBTQIA+ persons in international fora, believing that recognition of these rights is essential to the full promotion of human dignity, the application of the principle of equality and the elimination of all forms of discrimination.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its solidarity with LGBTQIA+ people who are victims of intolerance, discrimination and violence on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as with the human-rights defenders who work on their behalf.
Brazil celebrates the advances achieved in the promotion and protection of LGBTQIA+ rights in different regions, while noting with concern the growing persecution of LGBTQIA+ communities in various parts of the world. On this date, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its commitment to combating all forms of discrimination, including those based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
