Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons

The Organization of American States (OAS) adopted and opened for signature, in its 45th General Assembly held on June 15, in Washington, the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons. Brazil, represented by the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sérgio França Danese, was among the first signatories to the Convention.

This is the first legally binding international instrument aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of older people. Its approval constitutes progress in the efforts to ensure, on a permanent basis, the rights of this population group. The convention recognizes the elderly as subjects of rights, empowering them and ensuring their full inclusion, integration and participation in society.
