PRESS RELEASE N. 40
ICJ provisional measures in the case filed by South Africa
The Brazilian government closely followed today's announcement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision on the request for provisional measures made by South Africa and directed towards Israel, within the scope of the case "Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip".
By emphasizing the legally binding nature of the Court's deliberation, the Brazilian government underscores the importance of full and immediate compliance with the decision.
The Brazilian government is convinced that the provisional measures will contribute to ensuring compliance with the Convention and the protection of the rights of the Palestinian people, as well as the necessary and immediate humanitarian relief, leading to the prompt cessation of hostilities.
Furthermore, the Brazilian government recalls the importance of the immediate release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas.
Brazil reaffirms its support for an economically viable Palestinian State, living side by side with Israel, in peace and safety, within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders, which includes the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
