High Level Event on Brazil's Candidacy to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) - Joint Note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Women, the Ministry of Racial Equality, the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship, and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples
In a ceremony held at the Itamaraty Palace on May 2, 2023, Brazil officially launched its candidacy for the 2024 to 2026 term of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC). The event highlighted the central role of human rights in Brazil's global engagement as a democratic and inclusive country, committed to dignity and the protection of rights for all.
During the ceremony, Brazil presented its commitments as a candidate to the HRC. If elected, Brazil aims to further contribute to the effectiveness of the Council and strengthen its role in preventing and addressing the root causes of serious human rights violations, with a strong emphasis on constructive dialogue and international cooperation.
The event was attended by the diplomatic corps, high-ranking officials from the Brazilian government, as well as representatives from civil society and academia.
Established in 2006, the HRC is the primary United Nations body dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. Brazil has a long-standing participation in the HRC and has served five mandates since its inception.
The elections for the upcoming term will take place in October during the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
More information on Brazil's voluntary commitments as a candidate is available here.
