PRESS RELEASE N. 8
Handover ceremony of the Brasília Consensus Rotating Presidency
In a virtual ceremony held today, Jan.8, Brazil handed over the rotating presidency of the Brasília Consensus to Chile. The Brasília Consensus was established on May 30,2023, in the context of the Meeting of Presidents of South American Countries, held on the initiative of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Under the Brazilian coordination, the Contact Group of South American Foreign Ministers held two meetings that approved, on Oct. 5, 2023, the Roadmap for the South American Integration. The document defined guidelines and established 17 priority areas for realunching regional integration.
In compliance with provisions of the Roadmap, Brazil coordinated its implementation and, between October and December 2023, convened high level meetings in health, development financing, infrastructure, climate change, defense and social development. During these meetings, contact networks were created with the aim of drafting sectorial working agendas and implementing concrete initiatives to resume integration and cooperation in South America.
During this semester, Brazil will continue to support the Chilean presidency and other South American countries in adopting the Brasília Consensus.
