PRESS RELEASE N. 73
G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
The 1st G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the group comprising the world's largest economies, in addition to the African Union and the European Union, will begin today, February 21st, in Rio de Janeiro. This represents the first ministerial-level meeting during the Brazilian Presidency of the G20.
The G20 foreign ministers will convene to discuss, among other issues, the role of the G20 in addressing current geopolitical tensions, as well as the effective reform of global governance. Under the motto "Building a fair world and a sustainable planet," the Brazilian G20 presidency will prioritize social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty; the promotion of sustainable development in its economic, social, and environmental dimensions and energy transitions; and the reform of global governance institutions, including the United Nations and the multilateral development banks. The Brazilian presidency aims to organize an inclusive G20, with participation from civil society and the hosting of a Social G20, founded on consensus building and focused on achieving concrete results and solutions that benefit all peoples.
Historically, G20 presidencies invite non-member countries and international organizations to participate in meetings on their calendar of events. The Brazilian presidency invited Angola, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Nigeria, Norway, Portugal and Singapore. Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay were also invited to the Meeting of Foreign Ministers. On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Mauro Vieira has already held bilateral meetings with some of his counterparts on the sidelines of the meeting, including the foreign ministers of Argentina, Canada, Egypt, France, Indonesia, Portugal and Russia, among others.
