PRESS RELEASE N. 59
Flight with Brazilians deported from the USA
A flight chartered by the United States government carrying 106 Brazilian citizens deported from that country is scheduled to arrive in Belo Horizonte on May 21.
The deportation process takes place entirely under U.S. laws and sovereign jurisdiction. The decision on how the deportation would take place – through commercial or charter flights – is related to logistical issues concerning the operation.
The Brazilian government has been notified of the flight and is monitoring its developments, with a view to ensuring that deported Brazilian citizens receive fair treatment.
Brazilian nationals returning to Brazil on this flight are in detention, with a definitive order of deportation against them, therefore with no prospects of regaining their freedom in the United States. Most of them are separated from family members.
The primary purpose of the flight is to reduce the time these nationals spend in U.S. detention centers, particularly in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Brazilian consular offices in the United States continue to provide all appropriate consular assistance to Brazilian citizens who remain detained in that country.
