Press Release n. 245
Establishment of the Administrative Structure for the Brazilian Presidency of the G20 - Joint Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance
With the aim of establishing the necessary administrative structure for the Brazilian presidency of the G20, which will begin on December 1, 2023, and considering that Brazil, together with Indonesia (2022 presidency) and India (current presidency), forms the troika of the group, the President of the Republic issued Decree No. 11,561 on June 13, 2023.
The Decree establishes the National Commission for the Coordination of the Brazilian Presidency of the G20, which will be composed of 39 federal government bodies, and designates the coordinators responsible for the two tracks of the group: the Sherpa track, representing the G20 leaders; and the financial track, involving the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank. Within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary for Economic and Financial Affairs will be responsible for coordinating the Sherpa track of the G20, which currently involves fifteen thematic lines/working groups. Within the Ministry of Finance, the Secretary for International Economic Affairs will be responsible for coordinating the finance track, consisting of eight thematic lines/working groups. The coordinators will establish the necessary internal structures for the activities of the Brazilian presidency.
Furthermore, the Decree stipulates that the coordination of planning and execution of organizational and logistical measures for the activities and events during the Brazilian presidency of the G20 will be carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Brazilian presidency of the G20 will comprise over a hundred meetings at various levels and in both tracks of the group. It will culminate in a Summit meeting to be held in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19, 2024.
Given the important role of the G20 in discussing key issues for global governance, with the participation of both developed and developing countries, the presidency of this grouping will provide a unique opportunity for Brazil to project its foreign policy priorities and domestic public policies in the areas of the group's activities.
