PRESS RELEASE N. 30
Escalating tensions in the Middle East
Brazil has been following with concern over the past few days the escalation of tensions the Middle East and neighboring countries. Military attacks, including the use of missiles, have been launched with worrying frequency against targets in many countries in the region, including Lebanon, Israel and, most recently, Syria, causing damages in residential areas in Damascus. The proliferation of these incidents exacerbates the spillover risk of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The Brazilian government calls on all parties involved in these actions to refrain from spreading hostilities in the region.
Also of concern are the systematic guerrilla attacks on maritime traffic in the Red Sea, with an impact already felt in global trade and supply chains.
Brazil advocates for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the affected countries, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter, and reiterates that only dialogue can lead to a satisfactory solution for all parties involved and offer real prospects for stability and lasting peace.
The Brazilian government reaffirms that the interruption of the current cycle of hostilities in the Middle East necessitates the immediate adoption of a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and the resumption of concrete negotiations between Israel and Palestine to achieve a two-state solution, with an economically viable Palestinian state coexisting alongside Israel, in peace and security.
