Press Release n. 309
Elimination of International Roaming Charges between Brazil and Chile
The governments of Brazil and Chile have agreed to put an end to the tariff associated with international roaming services between the two countries. This measure, which came into effect yesterday, July 25th, benefits users of telecommunications operators who are temporarily present in the territory of the other country. If a Brazilian provider offers international roaming functionality for Chile, its users who stay there on a temporary basis will not incur additional charges for voice, message (SMS), and mobile data communications. Brazilian consumers under these conditions will enjoy these communications just as they do in Brazil. The same treatment is granted to Chilean users who are temporarily in Brazil.
The elimination of international roaming charges is a result of the Brazil-Chile Free Trade Agreement, and its implementation is the outcome of extensive negotiations between the teams of both countries throughout this year. In Brazil, the dialogue on this matter was coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by the National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) and the Federal Revenue Service. The result represents an important incentive for integration in South America, as it reduces costs related to the mobility of tourists, businesspeople, and students between Brazil and Chile. This marks the first understanding implemented by Brazil on the topic. Furthermore, it exemplifies the benefits that the strong relationship between Brazil and Chile can bring to their populations and the entire region.
