Election of Mara Gabrilli to the United Nations Committee for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Representative Mara Gabrilli was elected in New York today during the 11th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for an expert vacancy of the UN Committee for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) for the 2019-2022 term. Gabrilli will be the first representative of Brazil in the CDPD. The nine elected experts will act in a personal capacity, monitoring the implementation of the Convention and making general recommendations for the rights of persons with disabilities.

The election of the Brazilian candidate reflects the country's commitment to this issue, demonstrated by the efforts and achievements of national policies to promote the rights of people with disabilities. Brazil has been taking steps in favor of the regulation and implementation of the commitments made with the ratification of the Convention, which advocate that persons with disabilities be protagonists of their emancipation and citizenship, "without leaving anyone behind", as determined in 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development.

The Brazilian Government appreciates the trust expressed by the member states in Mara Gabrilli and is certain that, in fulfilling her mandate, Gabrilli will carry out its activities with competence, dedication and dialogue, contributing in a substantive way to the protection and promotion of the human rights of all people with disabilities, everywhere in the world.
