Election of the President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly
Brazil congratulates Abdulla Shahid, Foreign Minister of the Republic of the Maldives, for his election as President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and wishes him success during his tenure. In the election held on June 7, Minister Shahid received 143 votes out of a total of 191, which made him the winner in the election. His term will begin next September.
The dignitary of the Maldives can count on the full Brazilian support for the exercise of his responsibilities as the President of the General Assembly. Brazil is confident of Mr. Sahid's abilities to lead the United Nations Member States in overcoming the challenges of the 76th Session. These will include, among other issues, the response of Member State governments to the global health crisis with the U.N. support.
Brazil congratulates the candidate from Afghanistan, Dr. Zalmai Rassoul, for conducting a remarkable campaign and expresses its thanks to Turkish Ambassador Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th Session, for the work he has been developing presiding over the General Assembly.
