Election of the new Director-General of UNESCO, Khaled El-Enany

The Brazilian government congratulates the fellow member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the election of Dr. Khaled El-Enany, from Egypt, to the position of Director-General of that Organization. The election, which took place today during the 222nd session of the Executive Board, is expected to be confirmed by the 43rd UNESCO General Conference, to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, between October 30 and November 13, 2025.

A former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt, Khaled El-Enany will be the first national of an Arab country to lead UNESCO. His election reinforces the voice of Global South countries on the multilateral stage and highlights the role of Egypt, a BRICS member country, in the international context.

The Brazilian government congratulates Khaled El-Enany on his election and wishes that he may lead UNESCO highlighting its core values and continuing the important work of the Organization in the 2030 Agenda for education, in the democratic regulation of digital platforms, in the protection of journalists and information integrity, and in the promotion of culture as a driver of development and diversity, with inclusion and equity. As a founding country of UNESCO, Brazil reiterates its willingness to work closely with the future Director-General in the Organization's multiple areas of action, always in favor of a more inclusive and effective multilateralism.
