Press Release n. 185
Election of the IOM Director-General
The Brazilian government congratulates Ms. Amy Pope of the United States on her election to the Board of Directors of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Ms. Pope will be the first woman to hold that position.
Brazil reaffirms the relevance of the organization as a leading agency in the area of migration, in the implementation and monitoring of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, to which the country rejoined last January. The Brazilian government reiterates its willingness to continue working constructively with the IOM to enhance the organization's role in combating the economic and social causes of migratory flows and in promoting and protecting the human rights of all migrants, regardless of their legal status.
In wishing success to the new Director-General in her mandate, the Brazilian government expresses its broad recognition to the management of the current DG, António Vitorino, whose dedication and commitment in the last five years have been essential for the Organization's operation in times of great challenges.
