Election of Silvia Pimentel to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
The Brazilian Government welcomed the reelection of Silvia Pimentel to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), on 26 June, in New York. Silvia Pimentel will serve, from 2013 to 2016, her third term on CEDAW.
The CEDAW is formed by 23 experts of recognized standing in issues related to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women, which was adopted by the General Assembly in 1979 and came into force in 1981.
Silvia Pimentel is a Professor of Philosophy of Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC/SP), where she has been teaching since 1972, and a long time activist in the women’s movement at the national, regional and international levels.
