Election of Professor Antonio Paulo Cachapuz de Medeiros to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea
Today, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Professor Antonio Paulo Cachapuz de Medeiros was elected judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Holding the position of Legal Advisor of Itamaraty since 1998, Mr Cachapuz was elected with the majority of valid votes of the representatives of the countries at the 25th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He will take office on March 7th.
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is an independent judicial body established to adjudicate disputes concerning the interpretation or application of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, the Tribunal is made up of 21 independent judges. Brazilian nationals have been composing the Tribunal since 1996, when the first election to the body was held.
