Election of Dr. Thelma Krug as Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

The Brazilian Government welcomed the election of Dr. Thelma Krug to the position of Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), held today during the 42nd plenary session of that Panel in Dubrovnik (Croatia). The Brazilian scientist will be a member of the Panel's Bureau responsible for preparing the next IPCC Assessment Report.
Dr. Krug holds a PhD in spatial statistics, remotely sensed data and meteorology, and is a senior researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (National Institute for Space Research). She is considered one of the most renowned scholars in the field of climate change and forests. Her election represents the acknowledgment of the important work she conducted as co-chair of the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories.

The Brazilian Government congratulates Dr. Hoesung Lee (Republic of Korea) for his election as Chair of the Panel as well as Ms. Ko Barrett (USA) and Dr. Youba Sokona (Mali), elected for the two remaining Vice-Chair positions. Dr. Krug and Ms. Barrett are the first women to hold the position of Vice-Chair of the IPCC.

The Brazilian Government reaffirms its support to the work of the IPCC. The Brazilian participation in the Panel has contributed to promoting research in the country and to a broader scientific understanding on the phenomenon of climate change, with particular attention to developing countries' scientific output.

The IPCC is the main intergovernmental body for scientific assessment of climate change. Established in 1988 under the auspices of the United Nations, it reviews and assesses the most up-to-date scientific, technical and socio-economic information to understand climate change and its impacts. Thousands of scientists from Brazil and abroad contribute on a voluntary basis to the work of the IPCC, which provides fundamental information for policy-makers.
