Election of Admiral Fernando Garcez to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS)
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the re-election of Vice-Admiral Fernando Garcez, of the Brazilian Navy, for a new term (2023-2028) as member of the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), in the election that was concluded on June 17, in the context of the 32nd Meeting of States Parties of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The CLCS is the UN System body responsible for the review of the continental shelf boundaries submitted by member states.
Admiral Garcez, who assumed the position of expert in the context of the 54th Session of the CLPC last February, received an expressive vote for re-election (151 votes from the 167 States present). Also elected at the occasion were experts from Angola, Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, Philippines, Ghana, India, Japan, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Kenya, Russia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Brazilian Government congratulates Admiral Garcez and the other experts on their election, as well as their member states of origin, wishing the elected experts success in their functions.
