Death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said, Oman

The Brazilian government has learned, with great sadness, of the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said on January 10th. A fourteenth-generation of the founder of House of Al Said, Sultan Qaboos was the oldest leader in the Arab world and the Middle East.

Over the fifty years in charge of the country, Sultan Qaboos fostered policies of modernization and development in Oman. His government was responsible for the significant increase in the population's standard of living, the promulgation of the Oman Constitution and the country's stability. At the international level, Sultan Qaboos stood out as a skilled conflict mediator and an example of tolerance, respect and commitment to his people.

Grounded in the unfaltering collaboration of Sultan Qaboos, Brazil and Oman have forged, since 1974, solid bonds of friendship and cooperation, anchored in common values, such as the constant search for the prosperity of their peoples and the resolute defense of the peaceful solution of disputes.

The Brazilian government is in solidarity with the Omani people and conveys its most sincere condolences to the Sultanate of Oman and the family of Sultan Qaboos.

Brazil wishes full success to the new Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, appointed today, 11/1, in performing his new duties.
